Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket. Now the question arises: who will take charge of India’s Test future? Shubman Gill is most likely to become the captain of the Indian Test team. Although Jasprit Bumrah was the vice-captain in Australia and has also led the team there in Rohit’s absence, it is unlikely that he will be announced as a full-time captain due to his injury concerns.

Shubman Gill, often referred to as the ‘Prince’ of Indian cricket, is seen as the next big thing. Gill has already captained Team India in Zimbabwe. He was named vice-captain before the Champions Trophy 2025, which was a strong indication that the selectors are grooming him as a future captain.

Shubman Gill has played 32 Tests so far for Team India

Gill has played 32 Test matches for India and, in 59 innings, has scored 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05. He already has five centuries and seven fifties to his name in this relatively short career. His highest score in Test matches is 128 vs Australia.

In the IPL, Gill has been the captain of the Gujarat Titans (GT) since the 2024 season. In the current 2025 season, GT have been performing very well under his leadership and currently stands in the top position on the points table with 16 points—eight wins and just three losses. Not only as a captain, he has shone so far as a batter despite the added responsibility. Currently, he is in the third spot in the race for the Orange Cap with 508 runs in 11 matches, at an average of 50.80 with a strike rate of 152.55, including five fifties.
