Shubman Gill is gearing up for his first Test series as India’s new Test captain, and ahead of the much-anticipated England series, he sat down for an exclusive interview with former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik on Sky Sports.
Gill, who recently captained Gujarat Titans (GT) to the IPL 2025 playoffs, worked closely with head coach Ashish Nehra during the campaign. Now, as he steps into a new chapter with Gautam Gambhir as Team India’s head coach, the focus shifts to how Gill will adapt to a very different coaching personality.
When asked by Karthik about transitioning from Nehra to Gambhir, Gill shared his thoughts on their contrasting approaches: “It’ll be very fun. Ashu Pa is very, like you said, very hands-on, very animated and very expressive in terms of his personality, and your personality kind of reflects on your coaching style as well. So he’s very expressive. Whereas Gautam is very determined, very committed. And he’s also very clear with his communication — what he wants from the players and what kind of mindset that he would want the players to have.”

Gill elaborated further on Gambhir’s leadership style: “And I think Gautam focuses more on the kind of attitude or the mindset that he requires from the team or the players. But I think they’re very different personalities. But at the end of the day, you know, you’re all working towards a common goal. The paths might be different, but you’re trying to reach the same destination.”
The upcoming five-match Test series against England, beginning June 20 in Leeds, marks the start of a new era for Team India. The squad will be without its three most experienced Test players — Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin — who have announced their retirement from the longest format.
