After the last-over drama at Lord’s on Day Three of the ongoing Test, former England batter Jonathan Trott indirectly compared Shubman Gill’s on-field behaviour to that of former India Test skipper Virat Kohli.
The flashpoint came during the final over of the day when England opener Zak Crawley appeared to be deliberately wasting time to ensure that only one over would be bowled before stumps.
Crawley twice pulled away just as Jasprit Bumrah was starting his run-up, delaying play and visibly frustrating the Indian team. Skipper Gill reacted sharply, and there were heated exchanges between players on both sides during the over.
Kumble Hits Back, Says Both Sides Evenly Matched
Former India coach Anil Kumble, who was in charge during Kohli’s early years as captain, defended Gill and dismissed the comparison. He said that halfway through the series, there’s little separating the two teams.
“At the end of 2 and a half Tests, exactly halfway through the series, there’s nothing much to differentiate. And England probably did not want to face a single over because after taking the last wicket the bowler Jofra Archer did not look happy. So it will be a great next two days.”
Kumble also explained that England’s tactics were clear, and even their players didn’t seem entirely pleased with how things played out.
“And yes, you know, from an English point of view, they wanted to just face one over. Probably they didn’t want to face a single over, but they ended up, because even Jofra Archer, when he got that wicket, was disappointed that he got a wicket. So, yes, in that sense, it’d be great to watch over the next two days,” Kumble added.
