Former England captain Michael Vaughan thinks that the England team looks a more balanced side in the ongoing Manchester Test by including left-arm spinner Liam Dawson. He also claimed Dawson as an all-round package.
Dawson was picked in the England Test team after eight years as their first-choice spinner Shoaib Bashir got injured, and he immediately made an impact by removing the in-form batter Yashasvi Jaiswal on day one of the Manchester Test.
Vaughan believes that Dawson is the kind of cricketer that gives the captain more control, and looking forward to the Ashes, this will make the English side stronger.
“He is the kind of cricketer as a captain you say ‘give me control, a few runs and you field nicely’,” Vaughan told the Test Match Special podcast. “It is the all-round package and for this England side, and going forward to Australia, they are stronger with this style of cricketer in it.”
Bashir is England’s No. 11 batter, but Dawson has 18 first-class hundreds. So, Vaughan wants Dawson in the team as he can be a handy batter and make the batting line-up longer.
“On the pitches we are seeing in the UK and potentially Australia I want to see a batting line-up that is absolutely packed,” Vaughan said.
Though Vaughan admitted that Bashir is the better spinner, he also acknowledged that the control Dawson brings to the team is more needed for this English side.
“The over-spin of Bashir is very dangerous but what you require in this England team on the pitches they are playing is control. I don’t think he (Dawson) is going to get six or seven-fors but he will get two or three. If the pitch breaks up he may get four or five-for,” he added.
