South Africa ODI captain Temba Bavuma has said that 36-year-old David Miller is still part of their plans for the One Day International format.
Miller is not playing in the series against England, which starts on 2 September. The veteran batter last featured for South Africa in the semi-final of the Champions Trophy against New Zealand. He is currently on a hybrid contract with Cricket South Africa and recently played for the Northern Superchargers in the Hundred. The series against England will be the second consecutive assignment that Miller misses, after making himself unavailable for the tour of Australia.
“What I understand is that those communications took place during his contract period, in terms of him being available during this time for The Hundred,” Bavuma told reporters on the eve of the Headingley ODI. “Essentially, he wasn’t available for selection – but I stand by the correction around that… David’s still in the mix when it comes to ODIs, if that answers your question. The Australia tour would’ve coincided with the Hundred. I guess any international commitments that occurred during The Hundred, David wasn’t available for. Unfortunately, the one-dayers clash with it – he wasn’t part of our build-up. But with the T20s, The Hundred is over, and he’ll slot back into the team.”
Miller has played 178 ODIs for South Africa, scoring 4,611 runs at an average of 42.30, including seven centuries and 24 fifties, with a strike rate of 103.68. The next ODI World Cup will be held in 2027, with South Africa among the host nations.
Following the ODI series, South Africa will play a T20I series against England. Miller will be available for all three T20Is.
