In the 2nd ODI of the West Indies tour of England at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff on June 1, England opted to bowl first. Batting first, West Indies posted a strong total of 308/10 in 47.4 overs. While chasing, England lost early wickets, but they found stability in Joe Root’s innings as England were 206/5 after 36 overs.

However, during that innings, Root achieved another milestone in his career. He eventually became England’s highest run-scorer in ODIs, surpassing the former ODI World Cup-winning captain, Eoin Morgan. Root also became the first batter to cross the 7000-run mark in ODIs for England, and it came in his 168th ODI innings. Morgan scored 6957 runs in 207 innings, including 42 fifties and 13 centuries.

Joe Root is now England’s highest run-scorer in both ODIs and Tests

Before this match, Root needed only 42 runs to achieve the milestone. However, by the end of 36 overs, England were in a tricky position with both Root (102* off 100) and Will Jacks (30* off 37) in the middle. Root also smashed his 18th century and is still going strong.

Now, Root is England’s highest run-scorer in both the 50-over and Test format. In ODIs, he now has more than 7000 runs while in the red-ball format, he has 13006 runs to his name in 279 innings, at an average of 50.80, including 65 fifties and 36 centuries.
