England pacer Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies, which begins on May 29, due to a right thumb injury. Left-arm seamer Luke Wood has been called up as his replacement in the squad.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed in an official statement that Archer will be reassessed over the next two weeks to determine his recovery timeline and potential return to action.
“England Men’s and Sussex fast bowler Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the Metro Bank ODI series against the West Indies due to a right thumb injury. He will be reassessed by the England medical team over the next fortnight to determine when he may return to action,” the ECB stated.
Although Archer was named in England’s ODI squad, he was not included in the T20I squad for the tour despite featuring in the previous T20I series against India.
Archer doubtful for India Tests
Archer sustained the injury while playing for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2025 during a match against Kolkata Knight Riders. The speedster, along with fellow England players Sam Curran, Moeen Ali, and Jamie Overton, did not return to India following the mid-season IPL break. Prior to that, Archer featured in all 12 league games for his franchise, taking 11 wickets.
This setback is likely to affect his chances of returning to the longer format, especially ahead of the Test series against India. Archer had been slated to feature for England Lions as part of preparations for a potential Test comeback but may now miss out due to this latest injury.
Archer has not played a First-Class match since his last Test appearance in February 2021 against India. While England have been easing him back through white-ball cricket, the long-term goal remains a return to the Test arena—either during the home summer or potentially in the Ashes down under.
