Seam-bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton has been ruled out of the rest of the white-ball series against the West Indies after fracturing his right little finger during the first ODI at Edgbaston on Thursday.
The injury occurred when Overton attempted a sharp return catch off Keacy Carty just two balls into his spell. He was immediately taken off the field for treatment. Spin bowling all-rounder Jacob Bethell stepped in to complete the over. Overton later returned and bowled five more overs, finishing with an impressive three for 22—his best ODI figures to date—despite visible discomfort.
However, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Friday that Overton will miss the remainder of the ODI series and the upcoming T20Is.
“Jamie Overton has been ruled out of the remaining Metro Bank One-Day Internationals and the Vitality IT20s against the West Indies due to a broken right little finger,” the ECB said in a statement.
The 31-year-old’s absence further compounds England’s injury troubles, with Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson already sidelined ahead of the ODI series. This leaves England with a limited pace attack consisting of Saqib Mahmood, Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts, and Luke Wood.
The ECB has decided not to call up a replacement for Overton for the remaining two ODIs—scheduled for Sunday in Cardiff and Tuesday at The Kia Oval—or the three-match T20I series, which starts Friday at Chester-le-Street.
