England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt reached a special milestone on Wednesday during the Women’s World Cup match against Australia at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. She achieved the landmark of 1,000 runs in the 50-over World Cup, becoming only the third English woman in history to do so.
This is a significant achievement in women’s cricket, as Sciver-Brunt is only the ninth cricketer in the world to score 1,000 or more runs in Women’s 50-over World Cup matches. She reached this mark in just 22 innings, making her the joint second fastest player to achieve the feat, alongside Australia’s Belinda Clark.
The right-handed batter is now also the fastest England player to reach this milestone, surpassing the previous record held by current England head coach Charlotte Edwards, who took 24 innings.
During the match, England made a solid start. Openers Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones shared a partnership of 55 runs. Former captain Heather Knight then added 20 runs, but England lost momentum with a flurry of quick wickets. Alice Capsey (38) and Charlie Dean (26) helped England to a modest total of 244/9, which they were unable to defend.
Annabel Sutherland, who also scored an unbeaten 98, was the standout bowler with three wickets. Meanwhile, Sophie Molineux and Ashleigh Gardner, who scored a match-winning century, took two wickets each. Alana King claimed one wicket.
Although Sciver-Brunt was dismissed after scoring just seven runs, her milestone remained a major highlight of the match. Despite the absence of their captain, Alyssa Healy, Australia secured victory to maintain their unbeaten run in the tournament. England suffered their first defeat and will next face New Zealand in their final league match on Sunday, 26 October, at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium.
