England Women defeated West Indies Women by 17 runs in the third and final match of the T20I series, completing a clean 3-0 sweep. Despite the series loss, it was the West Indies captain Hayley Matthews who stole the spotlight with a stunning all-round performance.
Batting first, England posted 144/5 in 20 overs. Heather Knight led the team from the front with an unbeaten 66 off 47 balls, while Nat Sciver-Brunt added a crucial 37. Hayley Matthews was the star bowler from the West Indies, taking 3 wickets by conceding only 32 runs in her four overs. She took the wickets of Sophia Dunkley, skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Amy Jones.
In the chase, Matthews took charge and played a brilliant knock of 71 runs off 54 balls, including 11 boundaries and a maximum. However, lack of support from the other end made the difference, as they finished at 127/8.
“I’ve been able to execute pretty well.” – Hayley Matthews
Matthews’ remarkable performance (3/32 and 71) earned her both Player of the Match and she also became the Player of the Series. In the series opener as well, she was named the Player of the Match for scoring an unbeaten century, which also went in vain. The West Indies skipper finished the series with 177 runs and three wickets.
In the post-match presentation, Matthews talked about her game and said, “Really good to be able to go there and score some runs and get some wickets as well. But definitely a closer game today, and one that we felt that we competed in really well. I think just having some really strong plans and playing to my strengths at all time, I feel like I’ve been fortunate enough to get to play a lot of T20 cricket around the world and gain a lot of experience and learn a lot more about my game, and just put my plans into practice. And thankfully, since I’ve been here, I’ve been able to execute pretty well.”
