England head into the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup semi-finals with renewed confidence and a strong sense of purpose under head coach Charlotte Edwards. After a patchy record in recent global tournaments and a tough Ashes last year, this campaign has felt like a reset and so far, it’s paying off.

Their tournament began with a statement performance, dismantling South Africa for just 69 before cruising to victory without losing a wicket. Heather Knight then showcased her experience with a match-winning 79* to rescue England from 78 for five against Bangladesh. Wins followed against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, the latter sealing their knockout berth in style.

There were stumbles too. Rain saved them after a poor batting display versus Pakistan, and despite reducing Australia to 68 for four, England were denied by a stunning Gardner-Sutherland partnership in a tight four-wicket loss.

Knight has been the heartbeat of the batting unit since her return from injury, including a superb century against India. Amy Jones has thrived as an opener, smashing 86* against New Zealand. With the ball, spinners Sophie Ecclestone and Linsey Smith have been outstanding, each picking up 12 wickets, though England will be hoping Ecclestone recovers fully from a shoulder scare.

As they prepare to face South Africa again, history is firmly on England’s side. They have dominated recent ODI meetings, including a semi-final triumph over the Proteas in the last World Cup. Now, Edwards’ side will look to prove they are genuine contenders once more.
