India women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur has returned to training ahead of the second T20I against England, set to be played in Bristol on July 1. A decision on her participation will be taken closer to the match, based on fitness assessments by the medical staff.
Harmanpreet sustained a minor head injury during a warm-up game against ECB Development XI last week. Though the injury wasn’t serious, she was rested for the series opener as a precaution.
Off-spin bowling all-rounder Sneh Rana remains optimistic of Harmanpreet’s comeback.
“There are positive signs, she [Harmanpreet] has joined the practice session today,” Sneh Rana said on Monday. “She will be assessed and monitored post the practice session.”
In Harmanpreet’s absence, Smriti Mandhana took over the captaincy and rose to the occasion by smashing her first T20I century. She became the first Indian woman and fifth overall to score hundreds across all three formats of international cricket.
Despite being without key pacers Renuka Singh Thakur and Pooja Vastrakar due to injury, India looked sharp and cohesive in the opening game. The visiting team went on to win that match by 97 runs.
While the series carries no immediate stakes, it provides valuable experience to India’s emerging players ahead of the T20 World Cup in England next year.
