West Indies Women’s captain Hayley Matthews sustained a shoulder injury after a fall on the field during the first ODI in Derby last Friday. Her absence in the second ODI against England Women was clearly felt, as West Indies Women suffered a 143-run defeat, being bowled out for 223.
To recover from the injury, Matthews will be traveling to London to consult a specialist, as confirmed by West Indies Women’s head coach Shane Deitz. “She’s going to London tomorrow morning, so we’ll know more then. Hopefully, we’ll get some good news tomorrow.”
Matthews had expressed her desire to join the squad for the second game, but given her condition, the coach prioritized her health and advised her to rest and recover.
“I was hoping she’d be okay today, but she got on the team bus and looked terrible, so we sent her back to bed. Hopefully, she’ll come good in a couple of days. She played really well the other day. She’s getting better as time goes on in the team, so fingers crossed. I’m pretty sure she’ll be right for the next game,” said Deitz.
One More Game Left for West Indies Women
The West Indies Women’s team still have one match remaining in their ongoing ODI series against England Women. They have a chance to avoid a series whitewash, but it will be a difficult task against an in-form England side and possibly without their skipper.
