Chelsea have sealed their spot in the Round of 16 of the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup 2025 after a convincing 3-0 win over Esperance Tunis in their final Group D match. Tosin Adarabioyo, Liam Delap, and Tyrique George were the goal scorers in a dominant performance by the Blues.
With this win, Chelsea finished second in Group D with six points from three games, while Brazilian club Flamengo topped the group with seven points.
As quoted in ESPN, after the match, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca expressed his satisfaction with the team’s qualification for the next round. He said: “It is important for us because 32 clubs are in this tournament, now 16. There are clubs in the last five or six years, they play Champions League final like Atlético Madrid and they are already in Spain. So we need to be proud, we need to be happy. And now, from the [top] 16, the target is to go to the first eight.”
“He is a very good player.” – Maresca on Liam Delap
Newly signed striker Liam Delap opened his account for Chelsea in this match, scoring his first goal for the club. Maresca praised the young forward and spoke about how quickly he’s adapting to the system:
“We expect the process to be quite quick with Liam and the reason why is because we know him and he knows us in the way we want to play. But Liam, as I said, we know each other very good so the process is quite quick and then it is also because he is a very good player.”
Chelsea will next face Benfica, the Group C toppers, in the Round of 16 on 29 June 2025.
