Atletico Madrid have been knocked out of the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup 2025, despite winning their last Group B match against Botafogo 1-0. Antoine Griezmann scored the winner for Atletico in the 87th minute as Julian Alvarez bagged the assist.

PSG also defeated Seattle Sounders 2-0, finishing at the top of the group with six points and a goal difference of +5. Both Botafogo and Atletico Madrid also ended with six points after three games each.

However, the Brazilian side had a better goal difference of +1, while Atletico Madrid finished with -1. As a result, Botafogo became the second team from Group B to qualify for the Round of 16, and they will face Palmeiras on 28 June.

“We know what we need to improve” – Simeone

After the result, Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone expressed pride in his players but criticised the standard of refereeing in the tournament. Speaking to DAZN, he claimed that refereeing decisions consistently went against his team.

He pointed to a specific moment in the match against Botafogo, where he felt a penalty decision should have stood but was overturned after a VAR review.

“Proud of the boys’ work. We gave absolutely everything we had. We won two out of three matches and even so, sadly we’re out. With six points, it wasn’t bad, but the match against PSG condemned us, where every refereeing decision always went against us. Today’s game also had a penalty decision overturned after a VAR review. It’s more of the same. We know what we need to improve, and this will help us move forward,” he said.
