It was India’s day again at Edgbaston. After reducing England to 84/5, the visitors looked set to dominate. But then came a stunning 303-run partnership between Harry Brook and debutant Jamie Smith that brought England roaring back. However, a late collapse triggered by the second new ball saw England all out for 420. England are trailing by 244, India still has nine wickets in hand, the game seems to be slipping—but Harry Brook believes there’s still hope. After stumps, he addressed the press.

On where the match stands

“Yeah, they’re ahead at the moment. But in cricket, anything can happen. If we get a couple of early wickets tomorrow morning, we’re back in the contest.”

On England’s mindset heading into Day 4

“Obviously, we’ve got a big task ahead. But everyone in the world knows we’ll go for the win. That’s how we play—try to put pressure and push the game forward.”

On the partnership with Jamie Smith

“It was tiring! But special. Jamie was brilliant to watch from the other end. He came out with a fantastic mindset, put the pressure back on India. That was class. We spoke about batting long, and he did exactly that.”

On whether the 99 in Leeds fired him up

(Laughs) “Yeah, I’ve never been out on 99 before—it’s not a good feeling. So I was really motivated to go big this time. I wanted that hundred. That said, I could’ve been out for a duck today, so I’m not complaining. I’ll just keep playing my way and giving it my best.”

Brook stood tall once again, but England will need much more if they’re to wrest this Test from India’s grip.
