India’s men’s football team recently made the nation proud by securing a third-place finish in the CAFA Nations Cup. This impressive performance marked a significant turnaround for the team. Midfielder Nikhil Prabhu was a key part of this success, making his official international debut and playing in all four matches. In an exclusive interview, Prabhu reflected on his journey, the team’s spirit, and the leadership that guided them to this impressive result.
Q: Nikhil, you made your official debut for the national team in the CAFA Nations Cup. How has your life changed over the last few months, and what was it like to play at this level?
A: It was a great experience. The biggest thing for us was the unity of the team. We all had a single goal: to perform well and win. Everyone was on the same page, and that’s what makes a great team. It’s an honour to play for the national team. My goal is to be consistent and keep playing for the country.
Q: The team’s third-place finish in the CAFA Nations Cup is a massive confidence booster, especially with the Asian Cup qualifiers coming up. How will this result help the team prepare for the crucial qualifiers?
A: This finish has given us a massive confidence boost. Finishing third ahead of teams like Oman and Tajikistan is a huge achievement. Our players are motivated and more aggressive now. We know what it takes to win against high-ranked teams, and we are ready to take that confidence into the Asian Cup qualifiers.

Q: With Khalid Jamil as the national team coach, many people were uncertain about whether an Indian coach could replicate the success of foreign coaches. How has he mixed with the team, and what is his approach?
A: Khalid sir has played for the national team himself, so he understands the passion and the demands of the international stage. He knows how to bring the best out of a footballer and what it takes to get the job done. His ability to connect with the players in the dressing room and on the field is a great asset for us. He knows the value of the Indian jersey and is very aggressive from the sidelines. He wants every player to play with an open mind and gives them the freedom to do so. Every player has been assigned their own role and responsibilities, and he has made one thing clear: a team needs more than one or two leaders—everyone must show leadership on the pitch. His door is always open for anyone with a doubt, and he is always available.
Q: In the absence of Sunil Chhetri, the leadership of players like Sandesh Jhingan and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has been crucial. How do they inspire the team with their leadership qualities?
A: Sandesh Paaji and Gurpreet Paaji are great leaders. Their experience is invaluable, and they lead by example. The most important thing is their consistency and dedication on and off the field. They are an inspiration to all of us and a big reason for our strong performance.
Q: The team’s defence has been excellent, but finishing in the attacking third is still an area for improvement. How can the team work on converting more chances in the upcoming matches?
A: A long camp helps us improve every aspect of our game. It’s not just about open play; it’s about finding different ways to score. Long throws and set pieces are a part of football, and having players who can execute them is a huge advantage. It’s all about scoring and winning, regardless of whether the goal comes from a set piece, open play, or a penalty.
Q: During the last transfer window, reports linked you with other clubs. However, you showed your loyalty by staying with Punjab FC. Can you tell us about that decision and Punjab FC’s role in your career?
A: My immediate focus is on being consistent with the national team and performing well in the upcoming matches against Singapore. After that, we have the Super Cup, and I am just concentrating on the matches ahead. As for Punjab FC, they have been instrumental in my development, especially in my transition from a centre-back to a central midfielder. It’s crucial for a player to have consistent game time and the right guidance, and Punjab FC has provided me with both. I am grateful to the club for their support.
Q: Finally, what was your family’s reaction when you returned home after winning the bronze medal?
A: I’m actually on my way home right now, as I was in Dubai for a short vacation. My family is very happy with my performance and incredibly proud that I was a regular starter. It was a dream for my family, as they have supported me throughout my career. I wouldn’t be here without their support.
