Former Indian wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer will have a stand named after him at Old Trafford in Manchester.
Engineer played for the Lancashire club for nearly a decade, and his contributions form a significant part of the club’s rich history.
RevSportz can confirm that the stand will be unveiled on Day 3 of the fourth Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which begins on 23 July.
Engineer scored 5,942 runs in the 175 matches he played between 1968 and 1976. He also took 429 catches and made 35 stumpings. When Engineer joined Lancashire, the club had not won a major trophy for around 15 years. However, he played a key role in helping the team lift the Gillette Cup four times between 1970 and 1975.
“They were incredible times, and Old Trafford was a marvellous place to be. People would come from miles away to see us play,” Engineer told the club website a few years ago.
“From the Old Trafford dressing room, we could see Warwick Road railway station, and before the game we would watch packed trains empty passengers onto the platform. We could hear the chanting, the excited chatter and laughter,” he recalled.
He also remembered how, during his time, everyone in England was talking about their remarkable team, which featured some outstanding players.
“It was amazing. Our lockers would be stuffed full of requests for autographs and invitations to parties. Everyone in England was talking about that great team — names like Clive Lloyd, Harry Pilling, Peter Lever and Ken Shuttleworth,” he said.
He added that they were the most famous one-day team of that era.
“That buzz lasted for years, and we were the most famous one-day team in the land.”
Engineer continues to live in Manchester following his retirement. One of India’s great batters, Dilip Vengsarkar, is also expected to attend the ceremony, along with other club officials.
