Real Madrid kept their faint hopes of retaining their LaLiga crown alive with a dramatic stoppage-time victory over Athletic Bilbao at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday. Federico Valverde, the Uruguayan who has had to play in multiple positions this season because of injury crises, smashed home a spectacular 93rd-minute winner from an acute angle as Real stayed four points behind Barcelona with six rounds of matches remaining.

Real had seen a Vinicius Junior strike ruled out for offside late in the second half, while Jude Bellingham had missed a couple of great chances. Real, who had endured a miserable week with a 5-1 aggregate Champions League quarter-final exit against Arsenal, were also thwarted by Unai Simon, Spain’s No. 1, in the Athletic goal.

Real Madrid lost only once in the league last season

Barcelona had piled on the pressure with their incredible come-from-behind 4-3 win over Celta Vigo on Saturday, and with Atletico Madrid suffering a shock 1-0 loss away to Las Palmas, the Catalans were threatening to run away with the league. Real’s last-gasp victory, however, means that the decisive game would well be on May 11, when they travel to Barcelona.

Real, who lost just once in the league last season, have already suffered five defeats this term. Regardless of what happens in the next few weeks, it seems certain that Carlo Ancelotti will move on, with a new manager installed at the Bernabeu in time for next season.
