Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta, in an exclusive chat with RevSportz, shared his views on the omission of Shreyas Iyer from the Asia Cup squad. Despite strong performances in T20s over the last few years, Iyer did not find a place in the Indian squad for the upcoming tournament.
The batter has also been successful as a leader in the IPL. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third title in 2024 and then led Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final in the 2025 edition. On both occasions, he led from the front with the bat, scoring 351 runs in 2024 and 604 runs in 2025.
Dasgupta believes Iyer should not be disheartened, as India are playing a lot of T20 cricket and there will be plenty of opportunities ahead.
“We are playing so much of T20 cricket. It’s just a matter of time and we see a lot of rotation in the next one year. I see most of those guys play for India — those 30-35 names that I was talking about. But yeah, big challenges now looking at the World Cup with it being just six months away, it becomes the dress rehearsal for that and you will try and stick with the squad as much as possible till the World Cup,” he said.
He further explained that team selection is about roles, not just names, and that Iyer does not fit the job expected from players like Rinku Singh or Shivam Dube.
“From that perspective, you do feel for him (Shreyas Iyer), but then again, every time you take someone, the question would be ‘Who do you drop then’? I myself have asked similar questions and somebody said, ‘Rinku Singh’ so I said he (Shreyas) is not going to bat at No. 6 and do the job of what a Rinku or a Shivam Dubey would do. You can’t really compare apples and oranges. What everyone should keep in mind is that when you mention a name, you mention a place for that person as well,” he concluded.
Iyer’s last T20I appearance came on December 3, 2023, against Australia in Bengaluru.
