One of the strangest decisions was taken by the Gujarat Titans (GT) management when they subbed out captain Shubman Gill. Tall and experienced pacer Ishant Sharma came in his place as an impact sub. However, things did not go in their favour at all as RR chased down the 210-run target in 15.5 overs with eight wickets in hand, courtesy of Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s historical 101-run knock off 38 balls.
GT fans were left surprised seeing their captain not taking the field, and Rashid Khan was handed the duties of being a stand-in skipper. Gill had a fantastic day with the bat as he scored 84 off 50, at a strike rate of 168.00. But, before Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav came for the chase, he was subbed out for Ishant Sharma.
“I sat out because I felt a back spasm” – Shubman Gill
Meanwhile, after the match, Gill was seen having a chat with the broadcaster and he revealed the reason behin of him getting subbed off. Gill said: “I sat out because I felt a back spasm, didn’t want to take a chance. Next match is at Ahmedabad, we’ve had a good run there. It was Suryavanshi’s day, his hitting was tremendous and he made full use of it.”
Regarding the match also, Gill shared his views, saying: “I think they took the game away from us in the powerplay, credit to them for that. We could have done a couple of things better, but it’s easy to say those things when sitting out, some chances came out way and we didn’t take them.”
