A brand new ASEAN Cup was announced by the FIFA president Gianni Infantino. The announcement was made on Sunday October 26, 2025, during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Malaysia.
The tournament is meant to bring national teams together and give them a bigger platform on the international stage. The new tournament will take place during FIFA’s official international match window, so the players from different clubs around the world can join their national teams.
“Through the FIFA ASEAN Cup, we are uniting countries together, and this competition will be a huge success,” Mr. Infantino said while unveiling the tournament. “It will help boost national team football in the ASEAN region and will support the development of our sport across all of Southeast Asia.”
Infantino’s announcement came just hours after East Timor was officially added in the ASEAN’s 11th member. “The number 11 is a symbolic one in the footballing world, as each team has 11 players” he added.
Southeast Asia already has the ASEAN Championship, where Vietnam won that competition earlier this year in January. The new tournament is expected to follow the same format as the Arab Cup.
FIFA said that they would work closely with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and other groups of stakeholders to finalise the format and schedule. The move is expected to give ASEAN football more recognition and competitive experiencein the international stage.
