Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, according to London’s Metropolitan Police. The alleged offences involve three women and are said to have occurred between 2021 and 2022. Partey, 32, has denied all charges and is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5.
Partey was initially arrested in July 2022, though his identity was not disclosed at the time, and he continued playing for Arsenal during the investigation. He became a free agent earlier this week after his contract with the club expired. Partey joined Arsenal in 2020 for £45 million and made 52 appearances across all competitions last season.
A statement from Partey’s lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire of Hickman and Rose, said: “Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name. Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further.”
The charges were approved by the Crown Prosecution Service after receiving a file of evidence from the police. The Met detailed that the charges include two counts of rape relating to one woman, three counts of rape concerning another woman, and one count of sexual assault involving a third.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, stated, “Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward.” He encouraged anyone affected or with information to contact the team via CIT@met.police.uk.
