Former Australia batter Damien Martyn has been released from hospital after recovering from meningitis. The last few days have been frightening for his family and fans.
Former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist shared the good news during the live Ashes coverage of fifth and final Test at the SCG.
Speaking on Kayo Sports, Gilchrist said:
“The wonderful news is that he has been released from hospital. He’s still got a bit of a journey to go to be fully recovered, but it’s terrific and wonderful to know he’s back home, and his family express their gratitude and thanks for all the support. The word from the medical staff was the ambulance officers who treated him as soon as they saw him could not have done it any more perfectly, which nipped the infection in the bud. He still has a bit of a journey to go; it was extreme, but great news.”
Martyn was taken to hospital on December 26 and was later placed in an induced coma after his condition worsened.
The right-handed batter played a key role in Australia’s World Cup triumph in Johannesburg in 2003, scoring 88 off 84 balls in the final. He was also the top run-getter for Australia in their title-winning 2006 ICC Champions Trophy campaign, scoring 241 runs at an average of 80.33 from five matches.
The former top-order batter retired from international cricket in 2006, though he made a comeback in the IPL with Rajasthan Royals in 2010.
