Injured in a mine blast at the Line of Control, the Khelo India Para Games 2025 silver medallist is a beacon of resilience for young athletes

Hailing from the rugged terrains of Jammu and Kashmir, Amir Ahmad Bhat’s journey embodies resilience and determination. A former Junior Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army, Bhat’s life took a drastic turn in 2018 when he suffered a life-altering injury from a mine blast during a mission on the Line of Control.

Despite the setback, the 30-year-old sharpshooter from Anantnag refused to let adversity define him. His perseverance led him to win a silver medal in the Mixed 25m Pistol SH1 event at the ongoing Khelo India Para Games 2025. His grit and dedication also earned him a spot at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, making him the first para shooter from both the Army and Jammu & Kashmir to qualify for the prestigious event.

“I was a sniper in the Army, trained in advanced shooting techniques,” Bhat shared with SAI Media. “Before my injury, I had no idea about shooting as a sport.”

What could have been a moment of despair became a turning point. A supportive colonel recognized Bhat’s potential and introduced him to para shooting, setting him on a path to a new purpose.

In just two years, Bhat transitioned from a military marksman to an elite para shooter. By 2022, he had already made an impact on the global stage, competing in seven international tournaments and securing multiple medals, including gold and silver at the Para World Championships.

His latest accomplishment at the Khelo India Para Games 2025 adds another milestone to his remarkable journey. Along with his silver medal, he also secured a spot in the finals of the Men’s 50m Pistol SH1 event, finishing 8th.

Bhat credits the Indian Army’s Marksmanship Unit for playing a pivotal role in his transformation. Their specialized training and unwavering support have been instrumental in his progress.

“In the Army, there’s no distinction between able and disabled,” Bhat affirmed. “Everyone is given the same respect and opportunities.” This ethos has been a cornerstone of his journey, proving that setbacks can be stepping stones to new beginnings.

For those facing similar challenges, Bhat’s message is clear: “Don’t be afraid. Pick up the gun and shoot. Shooting isn’t just a sport—it can be a way to reinvent yourself.”

As he sets his sights on future competitions, Amir Ahmad Bhat continues to inspire with his unwavering spirit, proving that resilience and determination can turn adversity into triumph.
