Ahead of the three-match ODI series against Australia, which marks the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, India head coach Gautam Gambhir refused to guarantee the two batting stalwarts a place in the team’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
On his birthday, Gambhir addressed the media soon after India completed a series whitewash over the West Indies on Tuesday.
When asked whether Rohit and Kohli remain in the plans for the next ODI World Cup, Gambhir said: “The 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years away. I think it is very important to stay in the present — that is something which is very important. Obviously, they are quality players, and their experience will be valuable in Australia. Hopefully, both will have a successful tour of Australia.”
Gambhir’s comments echoed those of chief selector Ajit Agarkar when he announced the squads for the Australia tour.
“We’ve picked them [for Australia]… as far as the 2027 World Cup is concerned, I don’t think we need to talk about it today,” he told reporters in Dubai. “You don’t have to think too far ahead at this point, as the team is picked for Australia, and you just need them to score runs like they have throughout their careers.”
For the first time since the Champions Trophy, Rohit and Kohli will be in action in Perth on 19 October, when Australia will face India in the first ODI.
Rohit was seen practising in Mumbai, while Kohli reportedly trained in London, where he stays with his family.
Even if both former captains have a successful tour of Australia, they will still have to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to remain in contention for selection.
