Young Indian pacer Harshit Rana’s coach, Sharvan, has revealed that the Delhi-based cricketer wanted to silence his critics through his performances.

There was a lot of talk about Rana’s selection in the team, but Sharvan said that head coach Gautam Gambhir knows how to identify talented young players.

“He called me and told me that he wanted to silence the outside noise with his performances,” Sharvan told The Times of India. “I just said, believe in yourself. I know some cricketers say he is close to Gambhir, but Gambhir knows how to identify talent, and he backs them. He has supported many cricketers, and they have done wonders for their teams.”

Rana conceded a lot of runs in the first two ODIs of the recently concluded three-match series against Australia at home. However, he proved his worth in the final ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), taking four wickets while conceding 39 runs in 8.4 overs. The 23-year-old pacer also finished the series as the highest wicket-taker.

Sharvan revealed that Gambhir had even scolded Rana once and warned him that good performances were the key criterion for selection in the team.

“In fact, he scolded Harshit quite harshly. He told him directly, ‘perform kar, warna bahar bitha dunga’ (start performing or I’ll bench you). He sends a clear message, no matter who you are. Rana is 23. Let’s give him some time,” he added.
