On Sunil Gavaskar’s 74th birthday, we reflect on the remarkable achievements of the legendary Indian batsman.
Sunil Gavaskar is a former Indian cricketer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest opening batsmen in the history of cricket. He played for the Indian national cricket team from 1971 to 1987. He was known for his solid defensive technique and his ability to tackle fast bowlers, particularly against the West Indies, who had a fearsome fast-bowling attack during his era. Apart from his achievements on the cricket field, Gavaskar has also been actively involved in cricket commentary and administration.
He served as a cricket commentator and was a part of the commentary teams for various international cricket matches. Gavaskar also held key positions in cricket administration, including serving as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) cricket committee.
Gavaskar emerged as a prominent figure in his debut Test series against the formidable West Indies in the Caribbean. Throughout his illustrious career, Gavaskar established numerous historic and memorable records.
One of his significant accomplishments was becoming the first cricketer to amass 10,000 runs in Test cricket. This remarkable feat was achieved in March 1987, after Gavaskar had spent his career facing tough bowlers such as Michael Holding, Andy Roberts, Joel Garner, Jeff Thompson, and Dennis Lillee. By the time he retired, Gavaskar had accumulated a total of 10,122 runs.
Additionally, Gavaskar held the record for the most centuries in Test matches, with an impressive tally of 34 hundreds in his 125 Test appearances. This record remained unchallenged for a considerable period until another cricketing legend, Sachin Tendulkar, surpassed it in 2005. However, Gavaskar still holds the third position in terms of the most centuries by Indian batsmen in Test cricket, behind Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.
On this special occasion, we pay tribute to Gavaskar’s extraordinary achievements, which have strengthened his status as one of India’s finest cricketers.
