Newly appointed India ODI skipper Shubman Gill has brushed aside talk of a possible rift between him and former captain Rohit Sharma, saying there is no such issue and that they share the same bond as in the past.
Ever since Gill was named ODI captain, there has been ongoing debate over how Rohit would react to the decision, particularly given he led India to a Champions Trophy win earlier this year before being relieved of the role, and whether it might affect his relationship with his successor. However, ahead of the ODI series opener against Australia, Gill put the rumours to rest, affirming that he shares a strong bond with both Rohit and Virat Kohli.
“Whatever the narrative might be outside, there has been no such issue between us,” Gill told reporters in Perth on the eve of the first ODI. “It’s just like old times. He is very helpful and always shares his experiences. I’ve been asking him for his suggestions. I asked him, ‘What would you have done on this wicket if you were the captain?’ I like to pick the brains of other players. I have a good relationship with both Virat and Rohit bhai. I always take their advice, and they are never hesitant to share their views.”
Gill, who is the 28th ODI captain of India, hopes to carry forward the legacy of the former captains.
“It’s definitely very exciting. Big shoes to fill, carrying forward the legacy of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. I’ve had so many experiences and learnt so much from them,” he said. “I’ve had numerous conversations with both Rohit and Virat about how to take the team forward and the kind of culture they envision for the Indian cricket team. I think those learnings and experiences will help our team going forward.”
