Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has floated the idea of bowling during the Powerplay at next year’s T20 World Cup, as conditions in the subcontinent are expected to favour slower bowlers.
In T20Is, Maxwell has taken 49 wickets — 17 of those in the Powerplay. Known for his knack of claiming crucial breakthroughs, Maxwell’s experience in India and Sri Lanka — the host nations for next year’s World Cup — could prove valuable when bowling on subcontinental pitches.
“I think in the subcontinent you might be able to get a little bit more out of it as a spinner early on. Especially with the new ball, the hard seam, and being able to grip on those dry surfaces,” Maxwell told reporters in Cairns ahead of the third T20I against South Africa. “So it might be something we think about heading forward.”
In his T20 career, Maxwell has claimed some key wickets with his off-spin. Most recently, he picked up two crucial scalps in the second T20I between Australia and South Africa in Darwin. Every time Maxwell takes a wicket, it’s usually followed by animated celebrations.
“I’m just as surprised as anyone when I get a wicket. “I love getting wickets. It’s very surprising any time I get anyone out. I’m there to do a job in the Powerplay, and I’m trying to execute that as well as I can,” he added.
Maxwell will feature in the third and series-deciding T20I against South Africa in Cairns on Saturday.
