A commanding batting performance from the top three propelled Gujarat Titans to a 38-run win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in an IPL 2025 match in Ahmedabad on Friday. The hosts made 224/6 and restricted the visitors to 186/6. GT moved to the second position with 14 points from 10 matches. SRH were left at second from bottom, with six points from 10.
The GT openers — Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan — wasted no time in putting the SRH bowlers under pressure. The pitch was perfect for shot-making and they just kept flowing from the blades of the left-right duo. There was hardly any force, just sublime timing and placement. The total raced to 83/0 after six overs. Between them, Gill and Sudharsan struck 13 fours and two sixes in that period. The opening partnership of 87 came in 6.5 overs.
Even though Sudharsan fell two short of what would have a sparkling half-century, Jos Buttler joined Gill and kept the scoreboard moving at a rapid clip. It was over 10 runs per over as the captain and the wicketkeeper went on the rampage. Gill’s timing was exemplary and the on-drives a rarity in T20 cricket. Looking set for a century, he was run out for 76 which came off 38 balls.

Buttler did not let the momentum dip although SRH tried to pull things back a bit after Gill’s dismissal. The England international steadied the ship with Washington Sundar and fell after making 64 off 37. The other batters didn’t get enough balls, but managed to hit a few sixes as the total soared past 220. Of the SRH bowlers who had a bad day, Jaydev Unadkat took three wickets in the last over.
The SRH chase was always going to depend on the start and it was not bad to begin with. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head added 49 in 4.3 overs before the latter was sent back by a brilliant catch by Rashid Khan deep in the leg side. SRH made 57/1 in six overs. There were five fours and three sixes in the Powerplay. Compared to the start GT got, this was a decisive difference.
Abhishek kept SRH’s faint hopes alive with a knock of 74 off 41 and struck six sixes. But Ishan Kishan struggled to accelerate. Heinrich Klaasen and Abhishek did their best to keep their team in the hunt, but the asking rate kept climbing. Even though Rashid went for runs, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna took two wickets each and derailed the SRH innings.
