Gujarat Titans would once again depend on their standout opening duo of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharshan to do the heavy lifting with the bat as they take on Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator in Mullanpur on Friday. GT have had a strong IPL 2025 season, primarily due to their exceptional top-order batting and a well-balanced bowling unit.
GT’s top three batters, Shubman Gill, Jos Buttler, and Sai Sudharsan have been phenomenal, contributing around 75.9 per cent of the team’s runs with a combined batting average of 57.6, the highest ever for any IPL team’s top three this season. The trio has been consistent, with a failure rate of just 20 per cent across their innings, and they’ve excelled in the middle overs with a strike rate of 165.2, also a staggering stat in the IPL. Their opening partnership averages 69 runs, the highest in this season, often setting a solid foundation at 10 runs per over. However, in the Eliminator against Mumbai Indians, GT will be without Buttler, who is off for his international duties with England. Sudharshan currently is the Orange Cap holder with 679 runs at an average of 52, whereas Gill is second on the list with 649 runs at 54.

GT’s overall team batting average of 43.1 is the highest in the season, and they’ve maintained a low dot ball percentage, showcasing their aggressive yet consistent approach. Despite a 33-run loss to Lucknow Super Giants, their middle order, including players like Sherfane Rutherford and Shahrukh Khan, showed resilience by stepping up when the top order faltered, addressing previous weaknesses. However, without Buttler, the likes of Rutherford, Shahrukh, and Rahul Tewatia need to step up to the occasion. Their ability to chase 200 runs without losing a wicket, a first in IPL history, and their consistent batting have been the main strength.

Their bowling attack, bolstered by acquisitions like Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, and Rashid Khan, has provided depth, though Rashid’s form has been a concern this season. Prasidh Krishna, with 23 wickets, is in the running for Purple Cap, while being the standout bowler for the one-time IPL winners. Sai Kishore, too, has been brilliant with 17 scalps to his name, bowling in difficult situations. GT also continued their training at their home base Ahmedabad during the league’s week-long suspension, and that has also kept them sharp. With a mix of experienced international stars and young talent, GT would like to continue what they have been doing successfully this season against five-time IPL winners Mumbai Indians.
It’s a do-or-die encounter for both the teams, and the winner will take on Punjab Kings in the Qualifier 2 on June 1 in Ahmedabad.
