Naib Subedar Gulveer Singh won the gold medal in the 10,000m event, giving India a golden start at the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 in Gumi, South Korea on the Day 1.
This marked Gulveer’s first and India’s third gold medal in the 10,000m event at the Asian Championships. Previously, Hari Chand and G Lakshmanan had won gold in this event for India.
The national record holder had a strong start and remained in a leading pack of five runners for most of the race. In the final two laps, he edged past Japan’s Mebuki Suzuki and Bahrain’s Albert Kibichi Rop to finish in first place with a timing of 28:38.63.
This was Gulveer’s second medal at the Asian Championships. He previously won a bronze medal in the 5000m event at Bangkok 2023.
National Games 2025 gold medalist Sawan Barwal also put up a good effort but finished fourth with a timing of 28:50.53.
Gulveer is in top-notch form this season. He holds the national records in both the 5000m and 10,000m. He will return to the track on May 30 in the hope of winning another gold medal in Gumi, as the 5000m is his one of the strongest events.
