England batter Alex Hales has announced his retirement from international cricket, concluding an impressive journey in the English jersey. In 156 appearances for England in international cricket, he accumulated 5,066 runs.
Hales’ final appearance for England was in the 2022 T20 World Cup, where his crucial role helped secure England’s third ICC global title. The point can be evidenced by his impactful performance in the semi-final against India, where he scored an unbeaten 86 off 47 balls.
Hales registered seven centuries for his country, including a then-record 171 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge. He also became the first England batter to score a T20I hundred. In Test cricket, he notched five half-centuries in 11 matches.
“It’s been a privilege to pull on the England shirt as many times as I have, across all formats. So now to be able to reflect on that journey, the career I’ve had on the international stage and the moments I have been fortunate enough to be a part of, is really satisfying,” said Hales.
“There are so many memories that I have made both on and off the pitch, but I look back particularly to those two One Day International World Record scores at Trent Bridge, and being able to reach three figures in both of those games on my home ground was really special. And, clearly, to come away from my last tournament with England as a T20 World Cup winner is the perfect finish,” he added.
Retired from international cricket, Hales will continue to participate in franchise league tournaments around the globe.
