
India Women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur praised head coach Amol Muzumdar for transforming the team’s mindset and inspiring a remarkable turnaround after their heartbreaking defeat to England in the group stages of the recently concluded World Cup.
“Everybody just thought, ‘It’s okay.’ After losing the England match, we were really heartbroken,” Harmanpreet said. “We were about to win that match, but we collapsed. We had seen this happen in the past. That day, (Amol Muzumdar) Sir also said, ‘You can’t make the same mistakes again and again. You have to cross that line.’ After that day, a lot changed for us. We couldn’t keep repeating the same things. We had to come with a strong mindset. That night changed a lot for us. It had an impact on everyone.”
India lost a close game to England by four runs. The Women in Blue regrouped brilliantly, showing renewed determination and clarity of purpose. They defeated New Zealand comfortably by 53 runs (DLS method) in a virtual quarter-final to qualify for the semi-final. In a thrilling clash in the semis, India chased down a mammoth 339 to beat the formidable Australian side by five wickets and storm into the final. In the high-octane final, India made history, clinching the title for the first time by defeating South Africa by 52 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
