It is often observed that teams performing exceptionally well in one season struggle to replicate the same level of success in the following campaign. A similar story has unfolded with Real Madrid, a club that secured three major trophies in the 2023–24 season but has failed to defend any of them this time around.

Following a disappointing end to their season — losing to arch-rivals FC Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final and being knocked out by Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals — changes were inevitable. And it appears that Carlo Ancelotti, who has been in charge of the Galácticos since 2021, could be the first to depart, despite his contract running until June 2026.

Is Carlo Ancelotti’s Departure Confirmed?

According to several Spanish news outlets, Ancelotti has verbally agreed to take over as head coach of the Brazil national team. The Seleção have been pursuing the Italian for some time, and after several attempts, they now appear closer than ever to securing his services.

When is He Leaving?

The Athletic, citing anonymous sources, has reported that Ancelotti has already informed the dressing room of his decision to leave. Meanwhile, transfer expert and journalist Fabrizio Romano has stated that Ancelotti will assume managerial duties with Brazil during the international window in June 2025. As a result, he would be ineligible to coach Real Madrid at the Club World Cup, scheduled to take place from June 14 to July 13, 2025 in the United States.

This would leave Real Madrid in need of an interim manager, right in the middle of a heated La Liga title race, where they currently sit second, four points behind Barcelona with five matches remaining.

Who Will Manage Real Madrid Next?

It is no secret that former Real Madrid midfielder and current Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is the frontrunner to take over. Leverkusen, seemingly prepared for his departure, have acknowledged a gentleman’s agreement in place should one of Alonso’s former clubs approach him.

There is also speculation that former Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp may return to the touchline, especially if Real Madrid come calling.
