At the age of 26, Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has announced his retirement from Test cricket.
Although Hasaranga has participated in just four Test matches over the past two years and has struggled to make an impact as a bowler, taking four wickets at an average of 100.75, he did manage to score a half-century in South Africa.
His move is believed to be aimed at increasing his availability for franchise cricket tournaments. “We will accept his decision and are confident that Hasaranga will be a vital part of our white-ball program going forward,” Ashley De Silva, CEO of SLC, said.
Having already featured in 48 ODIs and 58 T20Is, Hasaranga is a crucial figure in Sri Lanka’s limited-overs squad. He currently leads his team B-Love Kandy in the Lanka Premier League and is set to play pivotal roles in Sri Lanka’s upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup campaigns.
