22-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz once again proved his class on Centre Court with a hard-fought victory over Russia’s Andrey Rublev on Sunday, 6 July 2025. The win secured his place in the Wimbledon 2025 quarterfinals, where he will next face Britain’s Cameron Norrie.
After losing the first set in a tiebreaker 6-7 (5/7), Alcaraz bounced back in style, winning the next three sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. In his post-match interview, the Spaniard praised his approach against Rublev and called it a match he could be proud of.
“I think I played intelligent and smart today against him, tactically. A really good match, which I’m really proud about,” he said.
The second seed went on to reflect on his mental growth and the importance of resilience in tennis.
“Tennis is a sport where the outcome can change with just one point. One point can change the match completely, turn everything around. In tennis, you have to stay mentally strong all the time. I knew that I was going to play better,” he added.
The World No. 2 has shown flashes of brilliance in the ongoing Wimbledon but has also struggled to find consistent rhythm early in matches. Still, he has delivered memorable moments for his fans and shown signs of building momentum at the right time.
His major challenges still lie ahead, with seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic and current World No. 1 Jannik Sinner also in top form during the tournament.
Both Alcaraz and Sinner are currently leading the new generation of men’s tennis. The five-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz had defeated Sinner at the 2025 French Open and is now aiming to secure his third consecutive Wimbledon title.
