A mountaineer and school teacher, Subrata Ghosh, died on Thursday, 15 May, while descending from Mount Everest, the highest peak in the Himalayas, just a few hours after successfully reaching the summit.

Subrata hailed from the Nadia district of West Bengal. On Wednesday, he and another climber, Rumpa Das, who is also from West Bengal, began their ascent to Everest from the Nepal base camp.

Adverse and worsening weather conditions forced them to delay their summit attempt until Thursday afternoon. Despite the shortage of oxygen and challenging weather, Rumpa Das managed to reach Camp 4, but Subrata could not. He was missing for 17 hours, and his frozen body was finally found on the Hillary Step on Friday morning. The Hillary Step is located in the ‘death zone,’ where oxygen levels are extremely low.

“I still can’t believe Subrata is no more.” – Subrata’s relative, Pratap Saha

Bodhraj Bhandari, who is the managing director of the company which is organising the expedition, confirmed the death and said: “Ghosh reached the summit around 2 pm (Thursday) but began to show signs of exhaustion and altitude sickness during the descent. He refused to descend from below the Hilary Step.”

Subrata worked as a teacher in a school called Bagda Kapasati Milanbithi High School and was also a Lions Club member of Ranaghat West. Subrata’s relative, Pratap Saha, said:

“He was a skilled climber and went for several expeditions before this. When I got the message, I did not believe it… Then I called the head of the agency, who confirmed the news. I still can’t believe Subrata is no more.”

He added, “Subrata loved mountaineering from his childhood days. He took proper training and reached several summits in the past.”
