Manchester United’s struggles continue in the ongoing English Premier League, as they recently suffered a 0-1 defeat to Wolves at Old Trafford. With this loss, they are currently in 14th place with 38 points from 33 games. In that victory, Wolves’ Matheus Cunha played an influential role, and now reports are circulating that the Red Devils are reportedly very keen on the Brazilian forward for next season.
According to reports, United are looking to offload several players such as Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia ahead of the next campaign. All these players are currently loaned out, and to rebuild under Ruben Amorim, players like Cunha and Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap have been linked with the club. Cunha’s contract reportedly includes a £62.5 million release clause, and Fabrizio Romano has claimed that United are optimistic a deal can be reached, with negotiations currently ongoing.
“He wouldn’t make a difference for Man United” – Alan Shearer on Matheus Cunha
However, former Newcastle United great and the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer, Alan Shearer, while speaking to Betfair, has shared his view on the rumoured link between Cunha and United. He clearly stated that Cunha’s inclusion alone would not make a difference. He said: “Matheus Cunha has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, but wouldn’t make a difference for Man United – they’re going to need another six or seven players on top of that. He’s just one of the players, if it is going to happen, but yeah I get it and I understand it.”
“The reason why he signed a contract extension at Wolves was so that they could get rid of the release clause to get some decent money for him. United are going to need more than him, but he’ll be a welcome addition, absolutely. I don’t know what they’re going to have to pay for him. I suspect it’s quite a hefty amount. Has he got talent? Absolutely. Is he a bit of a maverick? Yeah, but you get that with most good players – they have an edge to them and a side which some people may not like,” Shearer further added.
