Australia’s captain Alyssa Healy has returned totraining ahead of Saturday’s final league matchagainst South Africa. It is a positive sign for her team ahead of the remainder of the Women’s World Cup.

Healy missed Wednesday’s match against England due to a minor calf strain suffered during a training session on October 18. She joined her team at Holkar Stadium in Indore on Friday for a light session.

Stand-in skipper Tahlia McGrath said the team is still waiting to make a decision on the opening batter-cum-wicketkeeper. “(Healy) is at training today … we havent finalised an XI yet, but shes still a bit of a day-by-day case and well see how that pans out,” McGrath told the media.

Healy started Friday’s session by jogging around the outfield. She was wearing a compression sleeve on her right calf. She then practised in the nets and faced throwdowns from assistant coach Dan Marsh. If needed, Australia can use Healy as a specialist batter. Backup wicketkeeper Beth Mooney can be behind the stumps in that case. Australia followed this strategy during Healy’s injury in the 2024-25 season.

McGrath also praised the team’s support and leadership. “I really enjoyed (captaining) the England game… I certainly have to listen a bit more in meetings and be a bit more switched on, but I enjoyed the opportunity to lead and enjoyed working with Ash (Gardner),” she said.

McGrath added, “She helped me a lot stepping into that vice-captain role and were blessed with so much support in the Australian team and with bowlers being so diligent in their plans.”
