In a move that caught many by surprise, South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen has announced his immediate retirement from international cricket at the age of 33. The announcement came just hours after Australia’s Glenn Maxwell confirmed his retirement from ODIs.

Klaasen, who had previously stepped away from Test cricket in January 2024, confirmed his decision through a heartfelt message on social media. Describing it as a “sad day,” Klaasen said the choice was not easy but one he has made with “absolute peace.”

“It took me a long time to decide what’s best for me and my family for the future,” he wrote. “From the first day, it was the biggest privilege representing my country… Playing for the Proteas gave me the opportunity to meet great people that changed my life… I will always be a proud supporter of South African cricket.”

Despite being highly rated by South Africa’s all-format head coach Shukri Conrad, Klaasen made just four appearances in the longest format since debuting in 2019. His limited involvement in red-ball cricket, combined with his exclusion from Cricket South Africa’s latest central contracts list, likely influenced his decision to pursue opportunities elsewhere—most notably in franchise leagues around the world.

Klaasen made his ODI and T20I debuts in 2018 and quickly established himself as a formidable force in white-ball cricket. In 60 ODIs, he scored over 2,000 runs at an average just shy of 44, with his explosive 174 against Australia at SuperSport Park in 2023 standing out as a career highlight. That innings remains the second-highest ever by a batter at number five in ODIs.

In T20Is, Klaasen played 58 matches, maintaining an impressive strike rate of 141.84. Known for his power and ability to dismantle bowling attacks, he became a key figure in South Africa’s limited-overs setup.

Though many had expected him to feature in the upcoming T20 World Cup following last year’s disappointment in Barbados, Klaasen’s retirement signals a shift in focus towards a full-time franchise cricket career.
