Mitchell Starc blew England away with an outstanding performance in the first Test of the Ashes 2025 at the Perth Stadium as Australia defeated England by eight wickets. The senior pacer took seven wickets in the first innings to dismantle England’s batting while bagging three in the second, completing a 10-wicket-haul in the Ashes opener. By doing so, he became the first player in 12 years to take 10 wickets in an Ashes match.
Starc also became the first Australian player to achieve the feat in 35 years. Craig McDermott was the last Aussie player who took 11 wickets in 1991 in Perth.
After being named the Player of the Match for his heroics, Starc told the host broadcasters: “Sums it up. Travis Head, to take the game on like that and come up trumps was something to watch. Helter-skelter two days. There was a lot of things said going in to the game but we needed to stick to our guns.”
Travis Head played one of the best innings of his Test career in a difficult pitch, scoring 123 off just 83 balls, including 16 fours and four sixes to take Australia to victory.
Starc praised his fellow pacers Scott Boland and Brendan Doggett, who scalped four and five wickets respectively in the match. “Scotty Boland came good, Brendan Doggett on debut was fantastic. First time I haven’t had Josh (Hazlewood) and Pat (Cummins) around for a while. Didn’t change my role at all. If I can just do my role as I’ve mostly done across the years, that was the plan.” he added.
