It will be interesting to see whether Mohun Bagan Super Giant can convince Greg Stewart to join the club for the upcoming season. A close source from his current club, Kilmarnock FC, informed RevSportz that Stewart underwent hernia surgery in April. Kilmarnock covered the costs for his surgery and post-operation treatment, with plans to re-sign him this year. Stewart initially moved from Mumbai City FC to Kilmarnock last year, and his current contract, which ended in May 2024, includes an option for an extension.
A reliable source from Mohun Bagan confirmed to RevSportz that the club is keenly interested in signing the former Mumbai City attacking midfielder. Negotiations are ongoing. However, it remains to be seen if Mohun Bagan can persuade the two-time ISL Shield winner to return to India. Stewart left Mumbai to join the Scottish club in January for family reasons. Additionally, both Stewart and Derek McInnes, Kilmarnock’s coach, share the same agent. McInnes’s contract runs until 2026 and his stock is high after a fourth-place finish last season, adding another layer to the complexity of the situation.
The source from Kilmarnock mentioned to RevSportz that “there has been no communication from the club about Stewart’s future this season so far. Kilmarnock had the option to sign him this season following his move last year, and for the record, he shares the same agent as the Kilmarnock manager, Derek McInnes.”
Stewart’s stint at Kilmarnock has been underwhelming, largely due to his hernia surgery in April. He started only once in nine matches, playing a total of 136 minutes.
Mohun Bagan wish to sign Stewart in the hope that he can replicate the impressive form he displayed while helping both the Islanders and Jamshedpur FC to the League Shield. However, considering that the 34-year-old Stewart left Mumbai City mid-season for family reasons, it remains uncertain if he will return to India after such a short time.
Sources indicate that a lucrative offer might make Stewart reconsider. It remains to be seen if Mohun Bagan, keen to fill gaps in their midfield, will go all out to lure Stewart back to India.
