Boria Majumdar in Dubai
We will be boarding for Kolkata soon. Readers will read this once we have landed in Kolkata. Already have multiple messages from office staff about urgent meetings back home. The travel desk has already started to check on visas for the Asia Cup, and tickets and bookings for the Women’s World Cup. And the thing is, we haven’t even recovered from this two-month-long madness!
But that’s what journalism is all about. The wheel doesn’t stop. Ahead of our departure, we had a team meeting at a cafe in Waterloo in front of the London Eye. And this is what I said to every team member. Yes, each one deserves a break. For sure they do. But then, journalists are always wired. A story will not tell us when it’s coming. A break can happen any time, and that means we are never really on a break. You need to be wired and accessible. And the truth is also that you are as good as your last story.
While viewers and readers commend us for our coverage, the moment we miss one story, the focus will be on that. What happened in England is now past. We should indeed look back with a lot of pride and satisfaction. But we also need to move on and focus ahead. That’s how our lives are, and that’s what journalism is all about.
The best part is that you get to challenge yourself every day. Much like Mohammed Siraj. Can you keep going, and for how long? He said he’d have bowled till he broke down. That’s what he is made of, and that’s why he is special. Can we keep going and keep pushing the bar? Excellence isn’t ever easy to achieve and, once done, far more difficult to sustain. That’s the only goal for us at RevSportz.
Also, it can’t be only cricket, and here I refer to men’s cricket. England was a massive tour, yes, and we put everything behind it. But that doesn’t mean the Women’s World Cup on home soil will be any less. Or the planning any less detailed. Or the Asia Cup, which is a geopolitical story of serious importance. The Asian Games 2026 planning has to start now if we are to ace the coverage again. And the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. 2026 is a packed sporting year which also includes the FIFA World Cup and the Men’s T20 World Cup on home soil. So yes, take a break, and get back for the churn.
We have chosen this profession. No one asked us to do so. The madness is in our veins and that’s what keeps us going. Each one at RevSportz knows this and is wired for it. We are all living a dream. To make a difference to sport, and in doing so, create a legacy. England was a small success story in this larger canvas. A miniature painting. But now, it’s done and it’s time to refocus. Recalibrate and recharge. We need to keep going. Much like Siraj.
