Nobody thought that India would go to England without the services of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The retirements of both of these modern-day greats from Test cricket have come as a shock to the fans of Indian cricket.
As these two batters had already retired from T20 international cricket last year, the only format they will be available for India in is the ODI format. Kohli has already expressed his desire to represent the country in the 2027 World Cup, and Rohit will try to lift the cup at least once in his career—a chance that he missed by a whisker in 2023.
But Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar doesn’t think that it will be possible for Virat and Rohit to play in the World Cup.
“I don’t think they will be playing.” – Sunil Gavaskar
“They have been massive performers in this format of the game. Again, the selection committee will probably be looking at the 2027 World Cup. They will be looking at whether they will be able to be in the team for the 2027 World Cup? Will they be able to make the kind of contributions they have been making? That will be the thought process of the selection committee. If the selection committee thinks ‘yes, they can’, then both of them will be there for that,” Gavaskar told Sports Today.
When Gavaskar was asked to share his opinion, he clearly said: “No, I don’t think they will be playing. I am being very honest. But, who knows, in the next year or so, if they strike a rich vein of form, and if they keep scoring hundreds and hundreds, even God can’t drop them,” Gavaskar stressed.
