Australian Glenn McGrath believes that India’s star batter KL Rahul’s position has been shuffled too many times. McGrath told Fast Bowling Cartel YouTube channel that it must have been difficult for Rahul to adapt to so many different positions.
“They’ve sort of moved him around. I think he’s nearly batted at all 11 positions at some stage. It must be tough for him to adapt.”
For the last few years Rahul batted well at the No. 5 position for India in ODIs but in the first ODI of the three-match series against Australia in Perth, the team management surprised everyone by sending Axar Patel to bat at No. 5 and Rahul was pushed to No. 6. He scored 38 off 31 balls.
The 33-year-old right-hander has played the highest number of matches in his ODI career at the fifth position – where he also holds his best batting average of 56.47. His second-best average 55.80 comes at the No. 4 spot.
McGrath praised Rahul for his adaptability. “He’s one of those versatile players. He top-scored for India in fairly tough conditions. So from opening down to I am not sure how low he has batted. Sometimes that can mess your confidence up but I think for him, maybe he’s just used to it and just adapts. He keeps as well, so he’s a very versatile player.” he added.
