Bhavani Devi started really well. 5 wins and then another commanding win going into the quarter final, all of India was hoping for a medal from her. However, she faced 2018 silver medalist Shao Yaqi from China in the semi final and lost 7-15 after some tough decisions went against her.

Facing the Chinese in China is hard. And when it’s a subjective sport, it is more so.

Reacting to the loss Bhavani said “I was a little rattled by the refereeing because the first few points weren’t called right. That upset me a little”.

While not for once suggesting that she lost because of that, the Indian star tried to fight back in the second period but it was always going to be hard against the local favorite.

“I tried to come back with myself but I rushed a little and she fenced better. The pressure perhaps told on me” she said.

Bhavani may have lost in the quarter finals but the way she went about her preparation and her competition in China, she has clearly added much to her ability as an athlete after bursting into the scene at the Tokyo Olympics two years earlier.

“Sport teaches you a lot. This is one more learning. I will pick myself up and move on and keep trying to get better and do well for my country”, she concluded.
