In one of the most remarkable and tactical moves seen in international T20 cricket, the UAE Women’s team stunned spectators by ‘retiring out’ all 10 of their batters during their Group B clash against Qatar in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Region Qualifier. The strategy, rarely seen at this level, was used to help force a result amid potential weather disruptions — and it paid off emphatically.
The match saw UAE post a mammoth 192/0 in just 16 overs. Opening batters Esha Oza and Theertha Satish put up a 192-run partnership. Esha Oza led the charge with a breathtaking 113 off just 55 balls, smashing 14 fours and five sixes at a staggering strike rate of 205.45. Her partner, Theertha Satish, added a composed yet aggressive 74 from 42 balls, including 11 boundaries.
UAE Women have now both of their matches in Group B
With rain looming and the urgency to complete the match increasing, the UAE pulled off an unorthodox strategy. As declarations are not permitted in T20 Internationals, the team sent in the remaining batters to the crease one after another, only for each of them to retire out immediately. The move was planned to ensure their bowlers had enough time to dismiss the opposition and secure victory.
The tactic proved to be spot on. UAE’s bowlers returned with fierce precision and skittled out Qatar for a mere 29 runs in 11.1 overs, sealing a massive 163-run win. UAE captain Esha Oza was named Player of the Match for her outstanding century — her fourth in T20 Internationals. With this win, UAE now have four points in two games and are at the top of Group B with a net run rate of +6.998.
