India’s young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi played a fearless 171-run knock against the UAE in the opening match of the Under-19 Men’s Asia Cup on Friday. His stunning innings helped India post a massive total of 433 runs for the loss of six wickets at the ICC Academy Ground in Dubai.

The 14-year-old reached his century in 56 balls and finished on 171 from just 95 deliveries. His innings included nine boundaries and 14 sixes, at a strike rate of 180.00. With this knock, Sooryavanshi broke the record for the most sixes in an innings in the history of Youth ODIs, previously held by Australia’s Michael Hill. In 2008, Hill smashed 12 sixes and scored 124 runs against Namibia U19.

The hosts won the toss and opted to bowl first. Left-arm pacer Yug Sharma dismissed captain Ayush Mhatre early, but Sooryavanshi, along with Aaron George, stabilised the innings with a 212-run second-wicket partnership off 146 balls.

George and Vihaan Malhotra both scored 69, while Vedant Trivedi (38), Abhigyan Kundu (32*) and Kanishk Chouhan (28) helped India set a massive target of 434 runs.

For the UAE, Yug and Uddish Suri took two wickets each. Shalom D’Souza and Yayin Kiran Rai also claimed one wicket apiece, but all the bowlers proved expensive.
